It is becoming more and more common for veterinarians to prescribe psychiatric medications such as Paxil, Zoloft and Prozac to treat dogs in distress. However, animal behavorists are warning pet owners - drugs are not magic pills.

The drugs are being used to help dogs with problems such as whining, crying and chewing on their cage while the dog owners are away for hours at work.

If your dog has anxiety when you and your family leave the house it may be worth exploring. However, behavior modifications should also be used in conjunction with medication such as physical exercise, not punishing the dog for being anxious — associating treats or food with being home alone.
