A man whose deceased pets stored in his freezer and live cats that were confiscated and destroyed is seeking more than $1.5 million from county and city officials.

Terry Davis seeks a jury trial in the lawsuit that was filed December 28th in Chancery Court. The suit alleges Murfreesboro Police, the Rutherford County Sheriff’s office, Animal Control officers and a veterinarian have all caused him emotional damages and suffering when his animals were seized and destroyed in December 2003 and January 2004.

Davis alleges the police and animal control officers destroyed two cats that were seized from his home and destroyed contents of three freezers that contained 114 pet cats and kittens along with a dog names Snowy he planned to bury in a pet cemetery.

“One kitten in the freezer (was) so large at birth that plaintiff (Davis) intended to submit it to the Guinness Book of Records,” the lawsuit stated.

Another count of the lawsuit alleges sheriff’s Detective Mellody Stephenson, Dr. Traci Helton and animal control officers seized 39 cats kept on his property Dec. 31, 2003 on Arnold Road.

The lawsuit accuses Dr. Helton of euthanizing 31 of the cats. Only two of the 39 cats were returned to him.
